Captivated by their beauty, Orion was immediately taken with all of them, Merope especially. He began to pursue them relentlessly. The sisters were frightened, and so they ran. But Orion refused to give up. In desperation, the sisters turned to Zeus for help to escape the pursuit. Zeus agreed, at first turning them into doves, but realized that would not make them completely safe, so he then immortalized them as stars in the night sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are versions of this story all around the world, going back to some of our earliest known histories.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the same time this myth was being told in Greece, in Australia, first nation cultures told this story as the Seven Sisters of Dreamtime, and the sisters were called the Mearame or Magara in some regions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe really interesting thing about this is that no one knows for certain if the stories told at the same points in time, on nearly opposite sides of the world, is purely a coincidence. It may be a sign of some shared, lost history of a common story passed down through ancient humans. If both the Greek and Australian versions of the story share a common origin, then this story may be 70,000 years old, or even older, as European contact with Australia was not documented until 1788. Given the history of colonization and how many indigenous people were killed, how much culture was lost, it's lucky that we still know about these common threads of history. There are a lot of related mysteries around these myths, their contents, what they can tell us about astronomy and human culture, but I can only write so much here. So he hatched a plan to steal her away. He gave Persephone a task of painting flowers for him, and while she was out doing this - the earth split in front of her, and she fell down to the underworld, the domain which Hades governs. While down in the underworld, Hades tricked her into eating pomegranate seeds. It is said that if you eat a fruit of the underworld, you must remain there for life. And so, trapped in the underworld, Persephone agreed to marry Hades. When Demeter finally found Persephone, she was grief stricken, knowing that her daughter would now be confined in the underworld and that she would never be able to live with her as before. Hades took pity upon her at the urging of Zeus, and arranged that Persephone could return to the surface once per year. And then, each year, when Persephone descended to the underworld, the plants would stop blooming, the earth would grow cold, and all harvests would cease, ushering in winter.
